Vincent van Gogh’s “Daubigny’s Garden” is a series of three paintings created in 1890, during the last months of the artist’s life while he was in Auvers-sur-Oise, France. Van Gogh was living in the home and under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet, not far from the home and garden of Charles-François Daubigny, a landscape painter whom Van Gogh greatly admired.

The paintings depict Daubigny’s beautiful and vibrant garden with vivid colors and expressive brush strokes, consistent with the style of Post-Impressionism, of which Van Gogh is a key figure. Post-Impressionism is a reaction against Impressionism, marked by a tendency to exaggerate and distort for emotional effect and to vividly communicate personal feelings. Van Gogh’s use of color, texture, and form in “Daubigny’s Garden” is typical of this art movement, providing a very emotional and personal interpretation of the landscape.

In the series, Van Gogh rendered Daubigny’s garden in a way that reflected both the beauty of the natural world and his own inner turmoil. The lushness of the greenery and the vibrancy of the blooming flowers are depicted with an intensity that speaks to Van Gogh’s passionate engagement with his surroundings, despite his personal struggles.

The “Daubigny’s Garden” series holds a special place in art history due to several reasons. Firstly, they represent some of the last works of Van Gogh, who tragically ended his own life not long after these paintings were completed. Secondly, these paintings, filled with an intensity of vision and a poignant vitality, are often seen as a testament to Van Gogh’s enduring artistic spirit in the face of personal despair. Lastly, these paintings also provide an insightful connection to the influence of Daubigny, an artist from the Barbizon school, on Van Gogh’s own artistic development, serving as a tangible bridge between different art movements and generations.
