Water Lily Pond

“The Water Lily Pond” is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by French Impressionist Claude Monet (1840–1926). These paintings depict his flower garden at Giverny and are his best-known works. The paintings in this series were produced in the last 30 years of Monet’s life, when he had settled into his Giverny house and built a water lily pond based on his observations and interpretations of the play of light, shadow, and reflections in the water.

The works are celebrated for their demonstration of Monet’s exceptional skill in expressing his perception of nature, rather than simply providing a realistic record. In these paintings, he used rich colors and bold brush strokes to create the shimmering surface of the pond, the delicate lilies floating on it, and the surrounding flora, making the viewer feel as though they are part of the scene themselves.
