Fernando Botero

Fernando Botero Angulo

Fernando Botero Angulo, born April 19, 1932, is a renowned Colombian figurative artist and sculptive painter. His signature style, also known as “Boterismo,” offers a whimsical and critical interpretation of people, political themes, and society, reflecting a self-contained world where corpulent figures dominate with their disproportionate volumes.

Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia, and began exhibiting his art as a young teenager. His talent was immediately apparent, and after finishing his schooling, he moved to Bogotá in 1951 to pursue a career as an illustrator. Here, Botero had his first one-man show, which was a critical success and signaled the beginning of a long and illustrious career. His early influences included pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial art, as well as the works of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera.

In 1953, he moved to Europe, where he spent most of his time in Madrid, Florence, and Paris. In Florence, he studied the works of Renaissance masters, which deeply influenced his style. His paintings and sculptures often echo the forms of these artists but with a modern, political edge.

Botero’s art is characterized by inflated, exaggerated proportions, giving his figures an almost cartoon-like appearance. This unique style, known as Boterismo, isn’t simply a test of aesthetic; it also serves to critique the political and societal conditions of his native Colombia and the wider world. He has created various notable pieces that draw attention to the violence and inequality that has pervaded Colombia’s history.

Beyond painting, Botero is also a skilled sculptor. His large, round sculptures have been displayed in major cities worldwide. Regardless of the medium, Botero’s work is instantly recognizable for its volume, roundness, and the subtle satire that pervades each piece.

Despite his global acclaim, Botero has never forgotten his roots. He donated a significant amount of artwork to museums in Bogotá and his hometown, Medellín, in the hopes of boosting Colombia’s cultural profile and inspiring future generations of Colombian artists.

Fernando Botero remains one of the most prolific and influential Latin American artists. His distinct aesthetic and social commentary continue to make him a vital figure in both contemporary art and cultural criticism.
